Jacquil Leathers: Changing Lives One Haircut at a Time

Looking and feeling good is important for self-esteem, but many people with disabilities – such as autism or sensory processing disorders – have a difficult time with the noise, motionless sitting, and touching involved in receiving a quality haircut.

That’s why Jacquil Leathers founded her business, “Seven Cuts Above,” to offer compassionate and non-threatening hair styling services. The Giving While Black podcast host, Barron J. Damon, recently spoke with Jacquil, a guest who exemplifies the essence of Black philanthropy – uplifting, amplifying, and celebrating the impact of people of color in their communities.

Jacquil's journey began in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she grew up in a single-parent household with three siblings. Despite facing significant challenges, including homelessness and dropping out of high school, Jacquil Leathers demonstrated resilience and determination that would shape her future. She found her path in the Job Corps, where she honed her skills and eventually pursued a career in hairdressing.

Finding Inspiration for a Business

As a child, Jacquil would volunteer with her mother in her sister’s classroom for students with disabilities. She noticed several of the students had haircuts that really didn’t fit with their personalities. Jacquil knew that individuals with disabilities might face difficulties with their hair and appearance, which can cause discomfort and negatively impact their self-esteem.

Jacquil felt compelled to address the issue. In 2003, she established Seven Cuts Above, a local barbering service with a unique mission. The business ventured into the community, providing haircuts and grooming services to individuals who find it challenging to access traditional barber services.

What sets Jacquil apart is her unwavering patience and adaptability when working with clients who may experience sensory sensitivities or anxiety during haircuts. She tailors her approach to each individual, even spending hours to complete a single haircut if necessary.

Jacquil wants to ensure clients feel comfortable and valued. She focuses on staying open-minded, being patient, and focusing on each individual. Jacquil understands that this small act of kindness can have a profound impact on her clients' lives.

Her deep-rooted belief in the power of giving led Jacquil to make a profound impact. Seven Cuts Above has become a symbol of inclusivity and empathy in the community.

Jacquil and her team provide more than just haircuts; they offer companionship, understanding, and a safe space for those who often feel overlooked. In addition to her business, Jacquil also provides volunteer hair styling services through various community organizations.

Philanthropy Takes Root

Jacquil's journey into philanthropy began at a young age when she and her mother volunteered at a homeless shelter. Despite their own challenging circumstances, they gave their time and energy to serve others in need. This experience left an indelible mark on Jacquil, instilling in her the belief that giving back is a blessing that enriches both the giver and the recipient.

For Jacquil Leathers, philanthropy isn't just about monetary contributions. It's about giving her time, talent, and resources to make a positive difference in people's lives. Her philanthropic journey is a testament to the fact that true giving extends far beyond financial means. It's about showing love and compassion to those who need it most.

Jacquil's definition of a philanthropist resonates deeply with her faith and her belief in helping others with her gifts and treasures. She embodies the true essence of philanthropy – giving selflessly and expecting nothing in return.

When asked about her proudest moment as a philanthropist, Jacquil's response reflected her humility and genuine love for her work. Her proudest moments come from the smiles and joy she witnesses on her clients' faces, knowing that she has made a positive difference in their lives.

Jacquil's story reminds us of the power of community and the impact one person can have when they dedicate themselves to uplifting others. Her story challenges us to look beyond traditional definitions of giving and find our own specific ways to make a difference in the lives of others.
